Inaugural Charity Magnolia Trophy Competition at Pike Hills Golf Club
Tuesday 25th May saw the inaugural Magnolia Trophy competed for by the ladies of Pike Hills Golf Club. The trophy was presented to the Ladies Section by past captain, John Masiak, whose wife Jackie was a well-liked lady member of the club and who sadly died in January 2020. During her long illness Jackie received care from the Magnolia Centre at York District Hospital and prior to her death, Jackie and John decided they wished to show their ongoing appreciation to the Magnolia Centre by introducing a charity fundraising competition to be played on an annual basis.
The Magnolia Centre at York is a Cancer Care Centre, with superb staff and facilities, giving world class treatment and support to its patients. Despite the poor weather conditions, 40 ladies ventured out and competed for the Trophy in an 18-hole competition which was won by Lucy Smith. A further 7 ladies also played in a 9-hole competition which was won by Sue Spence.
In addition, a 9-hole Crazy Golf course, constructed by John, was set up indoors for all members to play. Apparently, this was as much fun as the actual matches. In total £611 was raised from entry fees, a raffle and donations. Yet another example of Pike Hills Golf Club’s commitment to raising money for charities that have a local impact.
